Swiss public transport fares to adjust from December 2026

After three years of stable pricing, Switzerland’s public transport sector will introduce an average fare adjustment of 3.9% in December 2026. Rising energy, material and staffing costs, combined with political funding changes, are driving the need for this step. Inbound products such as the Swiss Travel Pass and the Swiss Half Fair Card will not be affected.

A balanced and targeted adjustment

The average fare increase of 3.9% applies to nationally valid tickets and travelcards. However, not all products are affected by the adjustment:

  • Prices for the Swiss Travel Pass and Swiss Half Fare Card will not increase

  • Prices for children, young people and families will see little or no increase

  • Selected products such as bike and dog tickets will also be adjusted

Why fares are increasing

Since the last nation-wide ticket price adjustment in 2023, inflation and operating costs have continued to rise, while energy prices remain high. At the same time, public transport demand is increasing steadily.

Additional financial pressure comes from changes to public transport funding mechanisms and reduced government contributions to regional services. As a result, transport operators can no longer fully absorb rising costs through efficiency measures alone.

Continued investment in quality and capacity

At the same time, the Swiss public transport system continues to expand and improve thanks to:

  • Increased service frequency

  • Expanded night services on weekends

  • Major timetable upgrades, including the largest expansion in north-west Switzerland in 20 years

  • Ongoing investment in modern rolling stock, infrastructure and customer experience

What this means for the travel trade

Key products for international guests, such as the Swiss Travel Pass and Swiss Half Fare Care, are not impacted by the new fare adjustments. Switzerland’s public transport system remains one of the most reliable and comprehensive in the world. The new fare adjustment will help ensure:

  • Continued high service quality

  • Seamless connections across the network

  • Capacity to meet growing demand
