Winter delights: year-round operation on the Luzern-Interlaken Express.

Running hourly throughout the year, the Luzern–Interlaken Express links two of Switzerland’s most beautiful regions. In winter, the panoramic route reveals its special charm as sparkling snowy landscapes, frozen waterfalls and crystal-clear lakes fill the journey over the Brünig Pass. A trip full of winter magic that connects Lucerne and Interlaken in just under two unforgettable hours.

Hourly connections in both directions make it possible to travel flexibly year-round between the Lucerne and the Lake Lucerne Region and the Jungfrau Region around Interlaken. The journey of just under two hours on the Luzern–Interlaken Express is considered a panoramic experience of the highest class, with snow-covered peaks, frozen waterfalls and crystal-clear lakes unfolding in impressive sequence during winter.

Shortly after departing Lucerne, the view opens across tranquil Lake Lucerne, framed by the snow-clad mountains of Central Switzerland. Following a stop in Giswill, the train begins its cogwheel-powered ascent of the Brünig Pass. Nestled among wintry slopes, Lake Lungern offers one of the most beautiful photo opportunities along the route. The Brünig Pass marks the route’s highest point at over 1,000 metres above sea level, with snow often a part of the landscape from November to April.

The journey continues steeply down into the Hasli Valley, through wintry open forests and past traditional Bernese Oberland houses. From Meiringen, the train follows the young River Aare, while frozen waterfalls plunge down steep rock faces. Soon afterwards, Lake Brienz comes into view, its turquoise waters standing out even in the cold season. The village of Brienz, renowned for traditional wood carving and home to arguably the most beautiful street in Europe, marks another highlight.

Finally, the route runs along the lakeshore to Interlaken, where the panorama of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains reveals itself in full winter splendour. This impressive train journey can also be experienced in the opposite direction, from Interlaken to Luzern.
