Temporary closure of the Gotthard Base Tunnel

Gotthard Basistunnel

Serious damage, normal operation expected from September 2024.

The SBB assumes that the Gotthard Base Tunnel will not be fully available for passenger traffic again until September 2024. During this period, passenger trains will be rerouted via the picturesque Gotthard Panorama Route on weekdays. At weekends, the majority of passenger trains will run through the Gotthard Base Tunnel.

How does the closure of the Gotthard Base Tunnel affect travel plans?

The temporary partial closure of the Gotthard Base Tunnel has led to some changes to the Swiss train schedules. However, this disruption also offers travelers a unique opportunity to experience the stunning landscapes of the Swiss Alps along the Gotthard Panorama Route.

Extended travel times and updated schedules.

The temporary partial closure of the Gotthard Base Tunnel has led to some changes to the Swiss train schedules. Since the end of September, individual passenger trains have once again been running through the world’s longest railway tunnel on weekends. SBB intends to offer travelers 31 train connections through the Gotthard Base Tunnel between Friday and Sunday evenings, starting with the timetable change on 10 December 2023. The journey time is to be reduced by one hour compared to the panoramic route. This means that the journey time between Ticino and German-speaking Switzerland for these trains will be the same as before the incident. In light of limited capacity, SBB has focused on those trains for which there is the greatest demand: On Friday evening and Saturday morning, a total of 17 trains will run from north to south. From Sunday afternoon, there will be 14 trains from south to north. The latter also run on public holidays. The exact connections are shown in the timetable overview.

International connections.

For international routes, there are also changes to be aware of. Some trains will run without changes, while others will no longer run continuously from the timetable change. The exact connections are shown in the timetable overview.
